Chavez Timeline

Tuesday, March 5th — Death. 58 years old.

  • Mourning period is called for the week and is extended after.
  • Ley Seca imposed.
  • Schools closed on the 6th, 7th, and 8th.
  • All radio stations either offering voice commentary on Chavez’ life or playing sad classical music (all day for several days).

Friday, March 8th — Funeral

Statesmen came from all parts for the funeral. The big screens showed the proceedings. Supporters lined up to visit his body and pay their respects. The military was there for crowd control. Avenue Proceres is at least a mile long and the line stretched for much of it. A local Chavista taxi driver was telling me that he didn’t go because the line was over 6 hours long and each person was allowed to stand in front of the casket for about 2 seconds.
